The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Faith has over seventy branches, the uppermost of which is the declaration: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’; and the least of which is the removal of a harmful object from the road, and modesty is a branch of Faith.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Based on this Prophetic teaching, the Australian National Imams Council encourages Muslims across all states and territories to take part in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, 1 March 2026.
This year, the initiative will take place during the blessed month of Ramadan, while many Muslims are fasting. Participating while fasting adds further spiritual meaning, as Ramadan is a month of purification, discipline and service. It is an opportunity to combine worship with positive action and community contribution.
Cleanliness is a core principle of Islam and Eman. Purification is not only a physical act but also a spiritual value that reflects responsibility, discipline and care for others. Removing harm from public spaces is a simple yet powerful expression of faith (Eman) in action.
Australian Muslims are also encouraged to be positive contributors to the society in which they live. Australia is our home. Participating in initiatives such as Clean Up Australia Day reflects our shared commitment to community wellbeing, civic responsibility and the Islamic and Australian spirit of working together for the common good.
Clean Up Australia Day is a practical way to care for our streets, parks, centres and neighbourhoods while strengthening bonds with fellow Australians from all backgrounds.
ANIC Recommends:
1. Mosques and Islamic centres are encouraged to register as official Clean Up Australia Day sites and organise local volunteer teams.
2. Imams, community leaders and organisations are encouraged to highlight the Islamic teaching on cleanliness and civic responsibility in Friday sermons in the weeks leading up to the event.
3. Youth groups, Islamic schools and community programs are encouraged to use this opportunity to promote environmental responsibility as part of Islamic ethics and active citizenship.
