Preparing Your Islamic Will
Assalamu Alaikom Wa Rahmatu Allahe Barakatuh,,
As Muslims, it is a religious duty to ensure our worldly affairs are in order, not only for our own benefit but also to uphold the rights of others and fulfil our obligation to Allah (SWT). One of the most important steps in preparing to meet Allah (SWT) and leave a positive legacy is writing an Islamic Will (Wasiyah), which demonstrates both foresight and obedience to Allah’s commands and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him).
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated: “It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to bequeath to stay for two nights without having his Will written and kept ready with him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Preparing your Islamic Will allows you to declare your Eman (faith), offer final advice to your family, and ensure your funeral, burial, and ensuring that your inheritance are handled in accordance with Islamic teachings. Through it, you can appoint an executor, settle debts, distribute assets Islamically, specify religious obligations such as missed fasts or unpaid zakat, and advise your loved ones to uphold the Qur’an and Sunnah after your passing.
We encourage you to:
-
- Read and understand the document carefully.
-
- Complete the Will thoroughly, ensuring all relevant sections are filled in.
-
- Sign the Will in front of two witnesses who are not beneficiaries.
-
- Store the Will securely, and ensure copies are kept with trusted family members, close friends, and, where appropriate, your lawyer or legal representative.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) advises you to seek legal or professional advice, especially where property, assets, debts, superannuation, or investments are involved. Every situation is different, and proper legal guidance will help ensure your Will is valid and effective.
Taking this step not only fulfils your religious duty but also brings peace of mind to you and your loved ones.
