Ramia Abdo Sultan was appointed to act as Community Relations Advisor to the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) in August 2019, whereby she was acting in a volunteer capacity for the duration of her term. Ramia has decided to step down from that role effective from today, due to work and family commitments. She will continue assisting ANIC in her capacity as a Lawyer wherever it is in the best interests of the community to do so.
In her time as Community Relations Advisor, Ramia has contributed to various initiatives, some of which include:
- Building bridges between the community and the Imams more broadly
- Building bridges between ANIC and other stakeholders
- Drafting submissions and contributing to consultation processes in relation to various proposed State and Federal bills
- Engaging with the media to address and respond to issues relating to the Australian Muslim community
- Appearing in interviews and announcements on behalf of ANIC to speak about matters affecting the community
- Assisting in promoting the need for religious discrimination laws to protect people of faith
- Working with representatives from other faith organisations on issues around religious freedom and religious vilification
- Engaging with Federal and State government agencies on matters of security following the Christchurch Mosque shootings in March 2019, as well as tackling issues around Hate crimes and Islamophobia.
The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) is grateful to Ramia for her time and effort over the years in assisting it and the community.
